Karen Patel is Research Fellow based at Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research, Birmingham School of Media at Birmingham City University
Karen is a Research Fellow based at the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research (BCMCR), Birmingham School of Media. She is currently working on an AHRC funded Innovation Fellowship in collaboration with Crafts Council, called Craft Expertise. Karen is also Director of the Centre for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the Arts (CEDIA) in the Faculty of Arts, Design and Media, and Co-Lead of the Creative Industries Cluster in BCMCR.
Karen’s research interests include issues around diversity and inequalities in craft work and the wider creative industries, and cultural workers’ use of social media. She is author of the book The Politics of Expertise in Cultural Labour: Arts, Work and Inequalities (Rowman and Littlefield, 2020).
